Background and Concept Explanation

A fraction has a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom). A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part, like 2 and 1/2. To add or subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same. So we find a common denominator (often the least common multiple of the two denominators), rewrite both fractions with that denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. To multiply fractions we multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. To divide we multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. After any operation we simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. If the result is greater than or equal to one, we may write it as a mixed number. Doing these steps by hand is tedious and error-prone. This tool does them for you and shows each step so you can follow the logic.

• Two fraction inputs. You enter a first value and a second value. Each value has three fields: Whole, Numerator, and Denominator. For a simple fraction like 2/3 you leave Whole empty (or 0) and enter 2 and 3. For a mixed number like 1 and 1/2 you enter 1 in Whole, 1 in Numerator, and 2 in Denominator. How to Use This Tool (Step-by-Step)

1. Open the tool. You see two fraction inputs (First Value and Second Value), each with Whole, Numerator, and Denominator fields, and four operation buttons (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
2. Enter the first value. Type a whole number in Whole if you have a mixed number, or leave it empty for a simple fraction. Type the numerator and denominator. For example for 1 and 1/2 enter 1, 1, and 2.
3. Enter the second value. Fill in Whole (if needed), Numerator, and Denominator for the second fraction.
4. Choose the operation. Click the plus, minus, times, or divide button. The result updates automatically.
5. Read the result. The result card shows the answer as a fraction or mixed number and the decimal value to three decimal places.
6. Read the steps. In the Step-by-Step Solution section, expand each step to see how the tool got the answer. Calculations and Logic

Each fraction is stored as whole, numerator, and denominator. Missing whole is treated as 0. The tool converts mixed numbers to improper fractions using whole times denominator plus numerator. For add and subtract it finds the least common denominator (LCM of the two denominators). It rewrites both fractions so they have that denominator by multiplying numerator and denominator by the right factor. Then it adds or subtracts the numerators and keeps the common denominator. For multiply it multiplies the two numerators and the two denominators. For divide it multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second (flip the second fraction and multiply). After the operation the tool simplifies the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). If the simplified numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, the tool may convert to a mixed number: whole part is the integer division of numerator by denominator, and the remainder is the new numerator over the same denominator. Negative results are handled so the whole part carries the sign. The decimal value shown is the result of dividing the final numerator by the denominator (using the simplified or mixed form as appropriate). Tips, Limitations and Best Practices

Enter whole numbers only in the fields. The tool uses integers for numerator and denominator. For a proper fraction leave Whole empty or 0. For a mixed number fill in Whole, Numerator, and Denominator. Both numerator and denominator must be set for each value; otherwise the result does not update.

The tool works on two fractions at a time with one operation. It does not support chains like 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 in one go; do the first two, then use the result with the third if needed by hand. The decimal is shown to three decimal places; for more precision you would need another tool. Get AI Insight uses a server and can fail or return nothing; the main calculation does not depend on it.
