Common questions about this tool
Enter your fractions in the calculator (as proper fractions, improper fractions, or mixed numbers), select the operation (add, subtract, multiply, or divide), and the calculator automatically finds common denominators, performs the operation, and simplifies the result to lowest terms.
Yes, the calculator accepts both mixed numbers (like 2 1/3) and improper fractions (like 7/3). You can convert between them, perform calculations with either format, and the results are displayed in the simplest form.
Yes, the calculator automatically simplifies all results to their lowest terms by finding the greatest common divisor (GCD). This ensures you always get the most simplified fraction form.
Yes, the calculator can convert any fraction to its decimal equivalent. This is useful for comparing fractions or when you need decimal representation for further calculations.
Absolutely. The calculator helps students understand fraction operations, shows step-by-step solutions when available, and provides accurate results for homework, tests, and learning fraction concepts.

This tool is a fraction calculator. You enter two values as fractions or mixed numbers. You pick one operation: add, subtract, multiply, or divide. The tool computes the result and shows it as a fraction or mixed number plus a decimal. It also shows the steps so you can see how the answer was found. Many people need to add or multiply fractions for school, work, or everyday use. Doing it by hand means finding a common denominator, simplifying, and converting between mixed and improper. It is easy to make mistakes. This tool runs in the browser. You enter the two fractions, pick the operation, and get the answer and the step-by-step solution. It is for students learning fractions and for anyone who needs correct fraction math. Beginners can enter whole numbers and numerators and denominators; the tool handles the rest.
A fraction has a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom). A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part, like 2 and 1/2. To add or subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same. So we find a common denominator (often the least common multiple of the two denominators), rewrite both fractions with that denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. To multiply fractions we multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. To divide we multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. After any operation we simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. If the result is greater than or equal to one, we may write it as a mixed number. Doing these steps by hand is tedious and error-prone. This tool does them for you and shows each step so you can follow the logic.
Each fraction is stored as whole, numerator, and denominator. Missing whole is treated as 0. The tool converts mixed numbers to improper fractions using whole times denominator plus numerator. For add and subtract it finds the least common denominator (LCM of the two denominators). It rewrites both fractions so they have that denominator by multiplying numerator and denominator by the right factor. Then it adds or subtracts the numerators and keeps the common denominator. For multiply it multiplies the two numerators and the two denominators. For divide it multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second (flip the second fraction and multiply). After the operation the tool simplifies the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). If the simplified numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, the tool may convert to a mixed number: whole part is the integer division of numerator by denominator, and the remainder is the new numerator over the same denominator. Negative results are handled so the whole part carries the sign. The decimal value shown is the result of dividing the final numerator by the denominator (using the simplified or mixed form as appropriate). Steps are generated in order: mixed to improper (if needed), LCD and rewrite (for add/subtract), add or subtract numerators or multiply/divide step, simplify (if GCD greater than 1), and convert to mixed (if applicable).
Enter whole numbers only in the fields. The tool uses integers for numerator and denominator. For a proper fraction leave Whole empty or 0. For a mixed number fill in Whole, Numerator, and Denominator. Both numerator and denominator must be set for each value; otherwise the result does not update.
The tool works on two fractions at a time with one operation. It does not support chains like 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 in one go; do the first two, then use the result with the third if needed by hand. The decimal is shown to three decimal places; for more precision you would need another tool. Get AI Insight uses a server and can fail or return nothing; the main calculation does not depend on it.
Use the step-by-step view to learn or to check your work. Expand the steps to see the exact fractions at each stage. Reset Fields clears everything so you can start a new calculation. For negative results the tool shows the sign in the whole part when the result is converted to a mixed number.
